Air Mail Act of 1925

Image
One piece of legislation that came out that I feel was an important step into modern day delivery services using air is the Air Mail Act of 1925.  When this piece of legislation became a law, what it did was give the United States Postal Service higher private contractors to deliver mail rather than government appointed aircraft, which at the time was scarce and inconsistent.  The Act was brought forth by a congressman named Clyde Kelly who explained, "the Act permits the expansion of the air mail service without burden upon the taxpayers(Matignon, 2019) .   Although this Act went through many amendments, it paved the way for modern day commercial air travel.   Although it went through many amendments, like the Air Mail Act of 1926 and Air Commerce Act, it still opened the doors for basic private contracting for packages.  This is still carried on today as certain bigger corporations charter packages all over the world.  Sometimes DHL will car...

Human Complacency

Image
When it comes to aviation maintenace i feel the biggest human factors are complacency or invulnerabilty.  Whether it is task, organizational, or stress/fatigue induced complacency it all lead to maintaners not being 100% there when doing a job.  In maintenance you can see some people are just going about the job and lacking all situational awareness and seem to forget that they are actually in a dangerous proffesion.  They get this very relaxed, carefree attitude towards the work they are doing which can become impressionable to newer workers.      When it comes to team activities and have complacency amount the team, it causes inadequate work and none trustworthy work.  It can also lead to dangerous situations that can cause damage to aircraft or injury to personnel.  The team activity that comes to mine is engine removals from aircraft.  Sometimes they can seem very teddious and workers could get complacent.  It is w...

Air Marshalls

Image
Ever since 9/11 the TSA portion of the federal government has stepped up in many areas.  From random screenings to updated security measures at airports and a new standard of boarding planes, 9/11 changed everything.  One thing in particular, that is included in the layers of security, is the Federal Air Marshal Service.  An interview done by business insider wrote  The U.S. had just 33 air marshals working in a full time capacity on 9/11..."(C. Biles, December 2013).  Know, there are roughly 3,300 air marshals with only 2/3 actually full time while the others are still in training. The Air Marshal service could mitigate almost all threats with proper training since they are actually on the flights and observing everything going on.  They are the last resort and what I consider the fire extinguisher of the sky.  By that I mean id rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.  With that being said i feel that the FAA marsh...

Engine Importance

Image
Every part of an airplane is needed for an aircraft to take off, however I feel the most critical system in any aircraft is the powerplant.  No matter what without a powerplant all any aircraft would be is a very expensive paper weight.  Depending on the aircraft there may only be one engine and any type of total engine failure could result in aircraft incident and could potentially lead to death.  With modern day airliners most have two engines which losing both motors is very rare.  In a USA Today, they interviewed pilot John Cox, and when asked about total engine failure he responded " It would vary depending upon the wind, but around 100 miles would be a good estimate. Having all engines quit in a modern airplane is extremely rare"(John Cox, 2013). However, if you take a F-16 with a single motor and extremely different aerodynamics compared to an airliner, with total engine failure there is no gliding.  Total engine failure means you have seconds to point th...

Temperature and Performance

Image
While in the Air Force I have been to many different places with my AMU and one thing i have always noticed as when out jets would take off at Las Vegas versus taking off at Alaska, they sound like completely different machines.  In 95 degree heat they sounded dull and un-energetic, however on the other hand, in 30 degree temperatures, they scream and sound like a dying animal!  So is it just sound or is the engine actually performing better?   As I was going through our weekly reading I came across chapter 11 which directly relates to aircraft performance.  What reading about density i read the temperature and density directly correlate.  The colder it is the more dense the air is and vise versa with hot air making the air less dense.  This mean that say the engine ideal combustion ratio is 15:1, meaning you need 15 parts air for every 1 part of fuel.  While reading an article it explained " cold air molecules move slower and collide with less en...

Ethics and Integrity

Image
When it comes to ethics in the aviation industry for me is having integrity.  Since I work as an jet engine mechanic i know from first hand experience that you need to be able to do the right thing not matter how unfavorable it may be.  You must have a solid integrity and not be swayed when you know something is wrong.  I have personally argued with my superiors because I knew something was wrong and did not want to sign off on no maintenance action required. I read an article about on linkedin called "3 Huge Reasons Why Integrity is So Important".  The narrator, Marcel Schwantes, tells his story about different jobs he has held and the difficult situations he has been put in where his superiors are telling him to do something that is against his ethics.  In his article he writes " It seems like a lonely place to be for those who do the right thing without the backlash. Yet it sure feels good to live and  work with integrity , and when we become know...
